Independence Day (1996)

When aliens in enormous spacecraft suddenly arrive in Earth’s atmosphere and start blowing things up, it falls to a cocky pilot (Will Smith) and a goofy scientist (Jeff Goldblum) to save the planet from total destruction. With plenty of action, special effects sequences and pithy one-liners, Independence Day is one of the 1990s’ best popcorn flicks. Bill Pullman co-stars as the gung-ho president who urges his citizens to fight back.

  • “Monster” = aliens
  • “House” = the planet Earth
  • “Sin” (Who allowed the monster in the house?) Technically, the aliens didn’t bother to ask anyone… However, the “area 51” could have been that sin.

Impressive special effects and a decent story line done by the book with all the Hollywood cliches.

From $300 to $30 million - sounds like a Hollywood story?

A previously unknown producer from Uruguay Fede Alvarez makes a 5 minute short called “Panic Attack” with awesome special effects on a shoestring budget, and gets a $30 million deal with Hollywood – read the story on Yahoo buzzlog . That is really amazing! And what’s most amazing to me is how much work he must have put into it. Of course, some SFX are a bit patchy, but for a small and (I’m guessing) volunteer crew that is a sign of a real passion. Now, here’s the video:

Serenity (2005)

The crew of the ship Serenity tries to evade an assassin sent to recapture one of their number who is telepathic. Netflix , IMDB Director: Joss Whedon STC Genre : Superhero “Special Power” – the weapon of a girl “Nemesis” – the Alliance “Curse” – the girl cannot control her power Very nice movie, at least for my tastes. A few usual Hollywood overkills like the Reavers, and some details perhaps are unnecessarily graphic, but otherwise quite well done.
